SQUAMISH
Improvements are being made to the 20 km of the Sea-to-Sky Highway that passes through the District of Squamish. Overall they can be described as widening the highway to four lanes with a centre line divider and 1.5m shoulders. The improvements are divided into two sub-areas because Squamish south is very different from urban Squamish to the north.
Squamish South
The Sea-to-Sky Highway in Squamish South can be described as primarily a rural highway passing through two Provincial Parks located within the municipal boundaries. Through this section the 4-lane highway will be divided by a centre-line median barrier and intersections are protected T type, except for the signalized intersection at Darrell Bay Road.
Urban Squamish
As the Sea-to-Sky travels through the community of Squamish the 4-lane highway will have a more urban feel with context sensitive design features including plantings in the raised medians. Along with arrival gateway features, there will be new signage for business areas. Existing signalized intersections have been expanded and a new underpass at Centennial Way will improve access to community recreation ammenities and enhance east-west connectivity for trails and municiple road networks. By increasing the highway from 2 to 4 lanes, north-south travel mobility will be greatly enhanced.
