BRITANNIA BEACH

Starting at Minaty Bay, the highway continues as three lanes for 1.5km through Britannia Beach. Several uncontrolled accesses have been consolidated in protected T-intersections, including a pedestrian and vehicle-activated signal at the entrance to the community. Approximately 1 kilometre from the Makin Lands to the Britannia Creek Bridge will revert to 2-lanes after the 2010 Olympics.
WHAT WE’RE IMPROVING
The Britannia Beach section of the highway from Minaty Bay to the Makin Lands consists of three lanes with a centre median barrier. A new two lane bridge was built over Britannia Creek, and when the old one is removed after the 2010 Olympics the paved approaches will be reclaimed and planted with grass.
Britannia intersections feature traffic islands and raised concrete medians and plantings selected through community consultation.
The detailed design discussion guide linked below shows final design, plantings and landscaping in this section.

FEATURES
T-intersection

Wider lines, cycling lanes and raised concrete islands give Britannia Beach intersections an urban look, signalling drivers to watch for local traffic and pedestrians.
Signalized T

There was strong support for a signal at the main entrance to the community to help vehicles and pedestrians to safely cross the highway.
New bridge
This new bridge was elevated to 200 year flood levels, giving increased protection to a community with a long history of flooding, most recently in 1991.
COMPLETED WORK

Completed 3 lanes with median barrier between Minaty Bay and Britannia south

Completed northbound chain-up area

Rock excavation to soften the notorious curve north of the Britannia Creek bridge was done to improve safety of the highway at the north end of the community.
