Doodson’s Corner

This sharp curve at Doodson’s Corner, eighteen kilometres north of Horseshoe Bay, is being straightened by crews removing approximately 250,000 cubic metres of material, the equivalent of a 30km long line of luxury coach buses. The excavated material will be used as back-fill for mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls at both the north and south ends of the cut. Though traffic has been routed through the rock cut since late July, MSE walls still must be constructed and the old highway removed and the area revegetated. When complete, the improved highway widens from 3-lanes on the south to four.

To the south of the rock cut, the last half-bridge structure between Lions Bay and Squamish is under construction. It shows typical constraints encountered by the builders: close proximity to live traffic and steep, tight terrain with railway and hydro lines below. Other photos taken from the south show the new alignment developing over fills or new structures while traffic passes on the old roadway. Once two new lanes are completed, traffic is directed ont them so that the old highway can be rebuilt and incorporated into the final grade.
