– Spring 2006

The picture on the left shows the amount of rock work done at the north end of Cheakamus Canyon. Improved rock catchments will be placed below the bluffs to prevent fallen rock from reaching the highway.

The centre picture shows road widening north of Cheakamus Canyon. The roadbed is now much higher in this area. After the new alignment gets its first lift (layer) of pavement traffic is moved onto the new surface, so the old road can be worked on. Once that’s done all lanes get a final lift of pavement and newly-painted lines.

On the right is a picture of the new Rubble Creek Bridge under construction. The new bridge will be higher to help withstand larger debris torrents.

The left-hand picture shows the Brandywine railway crossing, site of a higher-than-normal crash history. The sharp corners will be replaced with gentler curves, and the highway elevated above the crossing to improve safety.

The centre picture was taken just north of Cheakamus Creek Bridge, where the highway is being widened for the addition of another passing lane.

The picture on the right is looking south down Powerline Hill. The corners are being softened, and an additional passing lane is being added to improve highway safety and reliability.
